Greenstone Geothermal - What We Do

What Greenstone Geothermal does

Of the handful of companies providing Geothermal Energy solutions Greenstone Geothermal (Pty) Ltd is the only company with full turnkey capability in both deep and shallow geothermal energy systems. In addition, Greenstone Geothermal provides Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and Tri-generation solutions utilizing the same heat harvesting and power generation competence needed for geothermal energy.

How We Do It

Our Capability

Greenstone Geothermal has formed an international consortium of leading technology partners in the industry to establish itself as the premier Geothermal Energy and Tri-generation solution provider in Sub Saharan Africa.

Greenstone Geothermal adopts a utility model to the geothermal systems it develops, both for deep and shallow geothermal. The benefits to the client of this approach include no major capital outlay upfront, greater grid independence, guaranteed energy supply and 24/7 availability. Also in the event of grid failure, much smaller generators (one quarter the size of equivalent grid electricity) can be utilised to power the pumps used in geothermal energy systems.

Geothermal Energy

Nesjavellir Power Plant

Over the last five years Geothermal Energy has experienced dramatic growth in various parts of the world and today more than 64 countries exploit either deep or shallow (also referred to as ground source) Geothermal Energy for a variety of power generation, colling and heating needs. The growth in geothermal applications has been fuelled by technological advances in key components of geothermal systems including ground loop materials, binary turbines, heat pump equipment, working fluids for heat transfer, cooling technology, distribution systems and equipment. The variety of applications that have been enabled by these technological advances have led to development of modular, standardized systems and this in turn has resulted in significant economies of scale been achieved by equipment manufacturers.

Geothermal Energy in South Africa

South Africa has lagged behind the rest of the world in the exploitation of Geothermal Energy primarily because the cost of electricity has been amongst the cheapest in the world, supply was not constrained and cooling is generally a greater requirement than heating. However, with the electricity crises of 2008, the recent dramatic increases in electricity tariffs and the availability of efficient generation, heat recovery and cooling systems exploiting geothermal, process waste heat and ground source energy, applications are not only economically feasible but also present a very attractive green energy alternative for power generation, heating, cooling and hot water requirements. Furthermore, Geothermal Energy is the only form of renewable energy currently that is cheaper than grid electricity on a per unit basis and thus allows energy savings over the long term compared to grid-only electricity.
